In this relaxed two-hour class, we’ll gather around the table to begin a hana-fukin—a gridded sashiko cloth traditionally used in Japanese kitchens. These cloths are humble, useful, and deeply beautiful, bringing together rhythm, geometry, and handwork.

We call this sashiko made simple. The design is pre-printed on the cloth, so there’s no guesswork—just space to focus on the foundational techniques that make sashiko so satisfying.

You’ll learn how to read a grid, follow a pattern, and build clean lines of sashiko stitches using simple tools. This class is an easy entry point if you’ve been curious about visible mending or handwork, and a grounding, meditative project if you just want an evening of making.

You’ll leave with a piece that’s begun—and everything you need to keep stitching at home.

Expect a slow, rhythmic experience and a lasting appreciation for the art of the running stitch.

Preferred Prerequisite Skills

This two-hour class focuses on the hand-sewing elements that make sashiko unique. To make the most of our time together, we won’t be covering the absolute basics of hand sewing.

This is not an advanced class. It just shouldn’t be the first time you’ve picked up a needle.

If threading, tying knots, or simple stitches still feel uncertain, we recommend starting with our Practical Hand Stitching Basics class first—then returning to sashiko with full confidence.

In Hana Fukin, we’ll guide you through a project that’s both achievable and rewarding. You’ll leave with a stitched sample, a deeper understanding of sashiko, and the reassurance that even experienced hands are always learning.
