Learn the foundations of sashiko, a Japanese hand-stitching tradition known for its rhythmic, geometric patterns. In this online class, you’ll work entirely by hand to build structure, texture, and flow through grid-based designs like hitomezashi and moyouzashi. You’ll leave with a stitched reference piece and the confidence to bring sashiko into your own mending and making.

In this live online workshop, Loran will guide you through the core techniques of sashiko, including grid layout, stitch rhythm, and pattern building. The emphasis is on durable handwork and deep understanding—not rushing toward surface decoration.

This class will meet Tuesday, May 12, 2026 online from 7 to 9 PM Eastern Time. If that's too late or not the best time, the class will be recorded for asynchronous learning.

We will send a link out for the class a day or two before we meet so we can remind you of the start time and get the link to the top of your inbox. When checking out, please make sure to include your email address.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Start and end threads cleanly without knots, following traditional sashiko methods
  • Manage thread tension and stitch flow so both the front and back of your work stay clean and intentional
  • Navigate transitions within a pattern—what we call the “middle work”—so designs remain continuous and balanced
  • Build even rhythm and spacing that supports durable, long-lasting stitching

We spend real time on the in-between steps most tutorials skip. This class emphasizes “middle work”: how to start and end threads without knots, manage transitions within a pattern, and keep both sides of your sashiko clean and intentional.

This class is part of Approved Textiles’ ongoing commitment to repair as a practical skill and an act of stewardship. Mending keeps garments in use longer, reduces waste, and reconnects us to the labor embedded in everyday clothing.
