Hand sewing is one of the most powerful—and overlooked—skills we can have at our disposal. It’s how clothing is made, mended, repaired, and honored. It’s also a deeply grounding practice: a way to work with your hands, unplug from constant distraction, and create something real at the intersection of craft and art.

For generations, hand sewing was taught in schools. As Home Economics disappeared, so did access to these skills. If you didn’t grow up with a hand sewer in your life, picking up a needle and thread with confidence can feel out of reach—or like something you somehow missed.

You didn’t miss it. You just haven’t been taught yet.

In Practical Hand Stitching Basics, we make no assumptions about your experience. Whether you sewed once at summer camp twenty years ago or have never threaded a needle in your life, this class starts at the true beginning. It’s designed for anyone who wants to build a new hobby, mend and repair their clothing, or begin making things by hand with confidence.

This is a skills-first class. We’ll move slowly, explain the why behind each step, and give you time to practice—without rushing or judgment.

Creating an Objective Difference

Since offering this class, we've asked students of this workshop to fill out anonymous pre- and post-test surveys to see how the curriculum meets our goals of teaching hand sewing at its most basic and practical level. Over the Spring cycle students reported:

  • confidence in hand sewing increased by 131%*
  • knowledge of hand sewing basics increased by 104%*
  • familiarity of stitches and when to use them increased by 265%*

* For all the nerds out there, these findings are statistically significant with p values at the <0.0001 level with a confidence interval greater than 99%.

What we’ll cover

  • Needle types and when to use them
  • Thread types and how to choose the right one
  • Threading your needle and keeping your thread secure
  • Knots, including tailor’s knots, quilter’s knots, and figure-eight knots
  • How to start stitching with intention
  • Choosing the right stitch for the job, including:
    • running stitch
    • back stitch
    • whip stitch
    • basting
    • blanket stitch
  • Ending your stitch cleanly
  • Sewing on buttons securely and neatly

By the end of class, you’ll leave with stitched samples, a working understanding of hand sewing fundamentals, and the confidence to keep going on your own—or to step into our more project-based classes next.

As a thank-you for starting here, students in Practical Hand Stitching Basics receive 30% off their next Approved Textiles class.

This class isn’t about perfection. It’s about access, skill-building, and reclaiming something that should have never been lost.

Preferred Prerequisite Skills

This two-hour class is designed to teach the fundamentals of hand sewing from the ground up. We start at the true basics and build skills step by step.

You’ll feel comfortable here if you’ve never sewn before, learned once a long time ago, or have stitched casually but never felt confident in your technique. No prior hand-sewing experience is required.

This class is the starting point.

We’ll focus on essential skills like threading a needle, tying secure knots, starting and ending stitches, and choosing the right stitch for different tasks. The pace is intentional, supportive, and centered on building real understanding—not rushing toward a finished object.

Practical Hand Stitching Basics is recommended before taking our project-based classes, including Visible Mending, Bojagi + Patchwork, and Sashiko offerings. You’ll leave with stitched samples, a solid foundation in hand sewing, and the confidence to move forward into more complex work.
